Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 Manchester City

Manchester City

City dominated the opening exchanges without creating too many goalscoring opportunities, but that all changed on 24 minutes when Ilkay Gundogan’s left-foot strike cannoned off the post and Riyad Mahrez was quickest to react to the rebound to make it 1-0.

That briefly sparked a reaction from the hosts and Junior Moraes really should have made it 1-1 when he was played through by Taison, but under pressure from Fernandinho, the forward could only fire into the chest of Ederson.

Moraes was made to pay for that miss, as minutes later City doubled their lead with the same two players that combined for the first goal linking up again, this time though it was Mahrez who teed up Gudogan for a close-range finish.

The second-half continued in the same manner, with City creating chances at will, as Raheem Sterling hit the outside of the post and Nicolas Otamnedi had an acrobatic effort ruled out for offside.

The Citizens did eventually get the third goal that their dominance deserved with 14 minutes remaining, as Kevin de Bruyne broke forward and assisted Gabriel Jesus, who provided a left-foot calm finish beyond the helpless Andriy Pyatov.
