Guardiola ready to unleash Manchester City ace Foden

Pep Guardiola said Phil Foden was "something special" back in April, but he remains reluctant to pitch the teenage midfielder into his Manchester City side.

Pep Guardiola will reportedly attempt to ease concerns Phil Foden may have over a lack of playing opportunities so far this season.

The Manchester City teenage midfielder missed Wednesday night’s opening 3-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk because of a stomach bug. City got off to the perfect start in Group C thanks to goal from Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus.

The talented 19-year-old is also a doubt in Guardiola’s squad for Saturday’s visit of Watford to the Etihad.

The champions will be looking to immediately bounce back in the Premier League following their shock 3-2 defeat to Norwich City last weekend.

Foden is desperate to prove his worth this season having been restricted so far this term to a ten-minute substitute appearance in the opening day win at West Ham United.

City insiders have hinted the England under-21 starlet is earmarked to start next week’s Carabao Cup game at Championship side Preston North End. That will undoubtedly help him to showcase his talents to a broader audience, as long as he proves his fitness.

Guardiola had remarked earlier this month he would like the academy graduate to become ‘more vocal’ when it comes to pressing his claims as a first-team starter.

Foden, a boyhood City fan, has been at the club since the age of seven and his love for the Citizens could be why he has not demanded more playing time. Instead, he has kept his head down in training, preferring to learn each day from veteran midfielder David Silva.

The Spaniard is leaving the Etihad at the end of the season after a decade of service, suggesting Foden is already in the perfect place to take over from the Spanish schemer.

Guardiola, however, is keen to offer further reassurance to Foden about his playing time and that he needs to be ready to now answer the call in the coming games.
