Angelino linked with Dutch return

Manchester City

Manchester City defender Angelino has been heavily linked with a return to the Eredivisie with former club PSV and Ajax reportedly showing an interest.

Spanish left-back Angelino only re-joined City from PSV during the summer and he has featured more often than he was perhaps expecting duo to Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s ongoing fitness issues.

Indeed, the 22-year-old has played seven times across all competitions so far this term, although his defensive prowess has been called into question following some of his most recent displays.

Once Mendy and Zinchenko are both back firing on all cylinders it seems unlikely that Angelino will receive much game-time and that has put Dutch giants PSV and Ajax on red alert.

PSV reportedly had a €12million buyback clause inserted into the deal that took Angelino to the Etihad Stadium during the summer and they should have money to spend following the sales of Luuk de Jong and Hirving Lozano.

However, Mark van Bommel’s side are well off the pace in the Eredivisie title race and they have already been eliminated from the Europa League, which means they may not be an attractive proposition for Angelino.

Ajax are also said to be interested and the Eredivisie leaders may be able to tempt Angelino into a return to Holland, although he would not be guaranteed a first-team place at the Johan Cruyff Arena, as Argentina international Nicolas Tagliafico is already with the Amsterdam club.

There are also no guarantees that City would be interested in doing a deal for Angelino, particularly given the fitness concerns of their other left-back options, which means a deal in January still remains a long-shot.

Angelino is currently under contract with the Citizens until the summer of 2023.
