Dinamo Zagreb 1-4 Manchester City
Gabriel Jesus scored a hat-trick and Phil Foden was on target as Manchester City claimed a 4-1 win at Dinamo Zagreb in their final Champions League group game.
The Premier League champions had already qualified as Group C winners ahead of their trip to Croatia. Boss Pep Guardiola had hinted he would hand a few youngsters a chance in this dead-rubber but instead he named a strong starting XI with Foden and Eric Garcia the only fringe men handed starts, although Taylor Harwood-Bellis made a cameo appearance late on.
Garcia made his first Champions League appearances alongside Nicolas Otamendi in the heart of defence, with John Stones injured and Fernandinho suspended, while Foden came in for David Silva as the Spanish playmaker has a minor leg injury.
Dinamo needed to better Shakhtar Donetsk’s result against Atalanta to progress and made a perfect start as Dani Olmo smashed home a superb volley that gave City keeper Claudio Bravo no chance with 10 minutes on the clock.
City were level just after the half hour mark as Jesus nodded in Riyad Mahrez’s cross from the left and took the lead five minutes after the restart when Jesus finished off a fine team move that also involved Benjamin Mendy and Foden.
Jesus made sure he would be taking the matchball home soon after as he prodded in Mendy’s cross at the back post.
Foden completed the win late on from close range after being set up by Bernardo Silva.
City finished the group stages unbeaten with 14 points from six games, while Dinamo ended up in last place and their European adventure this season is now.
In the other Group C game Atalanta won 3-0 in Donetsk and the Italian side, who started the day bottom of the group, will now join City in the knockout stages with Shakhtar dropping into the Europa League.
