Dutch starlet Chong confirms United contract talks
Tahith Chong has revealed discussions have started about signing a new deal at Manchester United.
Netherlands Under-21 international Chong is highly regarded at Old Trafford and is seen as a player for the future by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been putting his faith in youth since taking charge.
The Norwegian boss spent £50million to sign 21-year-old right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace this summer while Welsh winger Daniel James, 21, was also brought in for around £15million from Swansea City.
Although catching the eye of senior management, 19-year-old Chong has only made two Premier League appearances, both of those coming last season, and there were claims he was considering leaving in the previous transfer window.
PSV and Feyenoord were said to be interested in signing the Dutchman and although reports claimed the Red Devils could entertain a loan deal, the winger ended up staying at the Theatre of Dreams.
Chong has now confirmed contract discussions have begun, telling Voetbal Primeur: “Of course we are talking, but it’s still too early to say anything about it. The season is still long and we will see what happens.”
Chong’s chances of regular first-team football this season remain fairly slim, especially after the signing of James, while Solskjaer also has options like Ashley Young, Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard when looking for wide men to make up his XI.
Chong was, though, an unused sub in the 1-1 draw at St Mary’s against Southampton before the international break and United’s current injury troubles means he may yet get a look-in over the coming weeks as he sits on the periphery of the squad.
Boss Solskjaer currently has Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial and Diogo Dalot unavailable to him so he’s having to dig deep into his squad to make up his matchday 18.
