Teenage forward Mason Greenwood will sign an improved deal worth around £25,000-per-week in early October, according to Manchester United insiders.

The Old Trafford academy graduate is poised to make his second senior start in Thursday’s Europa League opener at home to Kazakhstan side Astana.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is planning to give some of his fringe players a proper run-out.

Greenwood turns 18 on October 1 and extension talks are understood to have taken place between the club and his close-knit advisers in recent weeks, which are ready to be signed-off.

The Bradford-born youngster made his first-team breakthrough towards the end of last season, having scored an astonishing 30 goals in just 29 games in the United youth ranks.

He has stepped off the bench on four occasions so far this season, with United chiefs determined to keep Greenwood’s feet firmly on the ground.

It’s understood the 17-year-old earns around £5,000-per-week at present, and the new terms will be worth almost five times that amount when bonuses and other targets are included.

Earlier this month, we revealed how Greenwood is being used as an example to United’s younger players of how his professional attitude and willingness to learn have already got him to this stage.

Greenwood knows he will also put himself in contention to start Sunday’s Premier League visit to West Ham United if he can deliver the goals against Astana.

United, who have scored just once in each of their last four games, could certainly do with some extra bite in the attacking third of the field.

Striker Marcus Rashford has scored three goals, but two of those came in the opening day 4-0 demolition of Chelsea.

United rewarded Rashford with a £50,000-per-week deal when he first exploded on the scene three years ago but Greenwood will have to bide his time a little while longer before he can expect that type of cash on the table.
