Rashford – Greenwood will shine for Manchester United

Marcus Rashford is confident Mason Greenwood will continue to improve after he scored his first goal for Manchester United.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put his faith in the 17-year-old, and he delivered the goods at Old Trafford in the Europa League meeting with Astana. Greenwood’s strike in the second half ensured the Red Devils recorded a 1-0 win on Thursday night.

Astana looked like they would secure a draw on their trip from Kazakhstan, but Greenwood’s goal in front of the Stretford End proved too much.

Midfielder Fred hit the crossbar earlier in the game, while Rashford had several chances to kill the game off.

Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard were also denied, but United got off to a winning start in Group L, with Partizan Belgrade drawing 2-2 with AZ Alkmaar in the other match.

The youngster has been forced to bide his time under Solskjaer this season, but he was rewarded for his relentless work rate.

Greenwood was one of several academy players to start at Old Trafford, with Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and Axel Tuanzebe also named in the starting XI.

Solskjaer has described him as one of the best finishers he has seen and Rashford is confident the fans have got plenty to get excited about.

He told reporters: “Me being in his shoes in the past, I know how he feels. Even more important, that was the goal that won us the game, that’s what everyone should be talking about.

“He’s been doing well since he joined the first team and there is 100 per cent more to come from him. I’m sure he is excited, and everyone else is excited as well.”

United are now unbeaten in three matches in all competitions, with Solskjaer’s men winning back-to-back games.

The Red Devils are next in action on Sunday when they travel to London to face West Ham United before they then take on Rochdale on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.
