Manchester United v Aston Villa Team News
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes to have midfielder Scott McTominay available for Sunday's Premier League home clash with Aston Villa.
Scotland international McTominay has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in the victory over Brighton earlier this month, but Solskjaer is hopeful he could be involved at Old Trafford this weekend or during the midweek clash with Tottenham.
“We hope Scotty will be back as soon as possible, but he’s also been back home and I’ve not seen him,” Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference, conducted in Kazakhstan following United’s defeat to Astana in the Europa League.
“Maybe [he will be fit to face] Spurs but hopefully for Sunday.”
Fellow midfielder Paul Pogba is also closing in on a return following his own ankle problem, but Solskjaer does not expect the France international to be available to face Villa.
“Paul is stepping up his recovery and let’s see how soon he’ll be match fit and available,” Solskjaer added. “Of course, he’ll be like a new signing for us. He’s not really been able to play for us and, when we get him back, it’ll be like a new world-class signing and world-class midfielder.”
Villa boss Dean Smith signed a new contract on Friday and he will be hoping to celebrate that deal with a victory at Old Trafford.
Defender Bjorn Engels is available once again following a hip problem, while winger Jota could also come back into contention following hernia surgery.
United are unbeaten in 14 matches against Villa across all competitions, with their last defeat in the fixture coming in December 2009 when Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.
