Mourinho had midfielder tracked in Champions League clash

Old Trafford spies were in attendance for the midweek Champions League clash between Roma and Atletico Madrid.

And Manchester United insiders have told that it wasn’t to watch France striker Antoine Greizmann, who snubbed a move to the Theatre of Dreams earlier this summer by remaining loyal to Diego Simeone’s team.

It’s understood United manager Jose Mourinho, while still hopeful of resurrecting a deal for Griezmann, had instructed his network to scout a midfielder on show at Rome’s Olympic stadium, as the match ended in a disappointing 0-0 stalemate.

United handed Michael Carrick a 12-month deal earlier this summer but Mourinho is believed to be already planning for life without the 35-year-old veteran.

The Portuguese is a well-known admirer of Roma’s Radja Nainggolan, having previously looked at the Belgium international when he was in charge at Chelsea.

Mourinho was also linked back in January to Atletico’s 22-year-old starlet Saul Niguez, who intriguingly, has since signed an incredible nine-year deal with a buyout clause of £90m.
