Silvano Martina claims the defender will go under the knife to repair the ruptured cruciate ligament he suffered in United’s 2-1 defeat to Basel in the Champions League on December 7.
The 30-year-old, who will play no further part in the season as a result of the injury, will then begin on the long road to recovery in the new year.
Martina said: “Vidic will be operated upon in the upcoming days. Obviously, rupturing your cruciate ligament is not a small injury, but thanks to the medical progress in recent years it’s similar to a meniscus problem some 20 years ago.
“Of course, it will take some time before he returns to the pitch. However, I have no doubts whatsoever that he will recover 100 per cent.”
