Benitez’s contract at St James’ Park expires on July 1 and negotiations over a new deal continue to rumble on, sparking doubts about whether he will put pen-to-paper on an extension.

Several first-team players have given their backing to the former Liverpool boss and Ritchie, who has been a standout performer for the Magpies this season, is feeling confident the Spaniard will still be in charge come the next campaign.

‘I think so,’ he was quoted as saying by nufcblog.co.uk.

‘I don’t really want to talk about that because I don’t think we’re going to lose him.

I’m optimistic that he will stay.

‘I hope he stays, everyone hopes he stays.

There is no point talking about ifs and buts, as we don’t know yet, let’s just wait and see.’
