Newcastle v Manchester City Team News
Newcastle could have a fit-again defensive duo back available for Saturday's visit of Manchester City to St James' Park.
The Magpies beat the Citizens 2-1 on their own patch last season and will be aiming to bounce back after seeing their recent unbeaten run come to an end with Monday’s 2-0 reverse at Aston Villa.
City beat Chelsea 2-1 last time out to get back to winning ways and know they cannot afford to drop any more points this season, with leaders Liverpool already nine points better off than the champions.
They could though face a Toon team who have received a double boost ahead of the game, with Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune both under consideration following injury.
However, DeAndre Yedlin is absent due to a hip problem, while Matt Ritchie has undergone a second operation on his ankle which is set to keep him out until late January.
A victory for the Magpies would mark the first time they have beaten City back-to-back since 2003.
They are unbeaten in five at home and only Leicester have conceded fewer goals at home than Steve Bruce’s men.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane are long-term absentees for City and Pep Guardiola may look to shake things up following Tuesday’s scrappy 1-1 Champions League draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.
One man who will definitely be missing is Sergio Aguero, who is tipped for around three weeks out after damaging a thigh muscle in last weekend’s win over the Blues.
Guardiola will be aware that his side need to tighten up at the back, with the nine they have conceded in 13 matches the most by the club at this stage of the season in a decade.
They have also conceded first in their last three games, while they have faced a shot every 24 minutes this season, their worst ratio since 2010-11.
City do, though, have an excellent record against Newcastle, with that defeat earlier this year their first in 22 matches between the pair.
