Iron snap up Toney

Newcastle United

Ivan Toney has secured another temporary exit from Newcastle United after joining Scunthorpe for a second time.

English striker Toney spent the first-half of the season on-loan at Wigan Athletic, scoring four goals from 24 League One appearances, before being recalled by Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez.

The Spanish tactician wants the 21-year-old, who only made 10 league starts for the Latics, to be given more starting chances and he believes a return to Glanford Park will be of huge benefit.

Toney spent the second-half of the 2016/17 campaign with the Iron, scoring seven times from 17 outings, and he will be hoping to replicate that kind of form for the remainder of this term.

Graham Alexander’s side return to action on Saturday with an away trip to Portsmouth and Scunthorpe’s new signing could be included in the squad as the visitors target a crucial three points.
