Merino determined to build on home fixtures

Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino is excited for the next few weeks as the Magpies look forward to back-to-back home games.

The Magpies are on a poor run of form and have not won since October 21 when they beat Crystal Palace 1-0.

Rafa Benitez’s men have since lost five games in the Premier League and that record has seen them tumble down the table.

They are now 15th after their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but Merino is excited for their next two fixtures.

Newcastle will take on Leicester and Everton in the next 10 days and Merino has urged his team-mates to use the home advantage.

He told the Shields Gazette: “Playing at home is always an advantage for us. The strength of the crowd’s important, and I think with all the strength they give us, we’ll improve.

“We know we have to keep working like this. We have to be patient and confident in our possibilities.”
