Sheffield United are waiting to assess David McGoldrick and Callum Robinson after both suffered injuries on international duty.

The pair have been away with the Republic of Ireland squad, and they started Thursday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium.

McGoldrick arrived in camp with a shoulder problem, and he aggravated the injury after playing 92 minutes in Dublin.

The Blades frontman put his body on the line for Mick McCarthy’s team and he grabbed an equaliser with five minutes remaining after Newcastle’s Fabian Schar had opened the scoring.

Robinson suffered a hamstring strain and was replaced in the 58th minute, and both players will now miss Tuesday’s friendly with Bulgaria.

McCarthy has confirmed they will return to England for treatment and United coach Chris Wilder will be hoping they can both recover in time to take on Southampton on September 14.

Confirming the injuries, McCarthy told FAI.ie on Friday: “Both David and Callum won’t be coming back in when the squad report back to the Castleknock Hotel on Sunday.

“David came into camp with a shoulder injury but was determined to play against Switzerland and what a game he had. Callum felt his hamstring in the second half of the game, so it is best now that he also goes back to Sheffield United for treatment.”

Both McGoldrick and Robinson have featured heavily for the Blades so far this season, making four appearances each.

McGoldrick has failed to find the back of the net, but Robinson proved his worth after scoring his first goal for the club against Chelsea last time out.

Robinson was one of eight new signings at Bramall Lane this summer, with Wilder sanctioning a £7million deal for the Preston North End ace.

He was joined in Yorkshire by Oliver McBurnie, Lys Mousset, Luke Freeman, Ben Osborn, Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison and Michael Verrips.
