Wilder talks up McGoldrick’s importance

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has heaped praise on David McGoldrick despite the forward's lack of goals this season.

Republic of Ireland international McGoldrick has been a regular feature for the Blades this season and has played a key role in their rise to seventh in the Premier League table.

The 32-year-old has earned praise for his hard-work both on and off the ball, as well as the partnership he has formed with Lys Mousset over recent weeks.

However, McGoldrick has failed to net a league goal this season, with his last strike in any competition coming in the Championship back in April.

McGoldrick missed several opportunities during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux and Wilder admits the former Ipswich striker is growing frustrated by his failure to find the back of the net.

“I had five minutes with David in the dressing room, away from everyone else, and told him how key he is for us,” Wilder told reporters.

“He wants to get one, of course he does, but we play better with David in the team and the partnership between him and Lys is very important for us at this moment in time. Make no mistake about that.”

McGoldrick was replaced after 73 minutes of the draw with Wolves and Wilder says the fact the visiting supporters were singing his name as he came off shows how valued he is by everyone connected to the club.

“When David came off, because of a change we wanted to make, I didn’t hear anyone in our crowd sounding pleased,” Wilder added. “In fact, they were chanting and singing his name all the way through.”

Sheff United are back in Premier League action on Thursday when they welcome Newcastle to Bramall Lane and McGoldrick will be hoping that is the match where he can finally get off the mark for the season.
