Saints ace out of England squad
Southampton have moved to calm fears over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy’s fitness after he withdrew from the England squad through injury.
The 28-year-old has worked himself into the role of Saints’ number one goalkeeper under boss Mark Hughes and has enjoyed some positive performances between the sticks despite the south coast club’s poor start to this season.
McCarthy’s good form earned him a call-up to the England squad and he was hopeful of winning his first senior cap for the Three Lions.
However, having linked up with the national squad at the start of the week carrying a minor knock, McCarthy sat out training on Tuesday and the decision has now been taken to release him back to the club.
A statement from Southampton said: ‘The Saints keeper linked up with the group while nursing a minor injury and, while he has made positive progress in the past few days, it was decided the best course of action would be for him to return to Staplewood to continue his recovery over the break in the Premier League schedule.’
