Southampton have received a boost with the news that teenage striker Michael Obafemi is back in training following a hamstring injury.

Having become Saints second-youngest debutant at 17 years and 199 days when coming on as a substitute against Tottenham in January 2018, the Republic of Ireland international made five top-flight appearances this term before injury struck.

He scored his first senior goal in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield Town on December 22 but picked up the leg problem in the match and has been sidelined ever since.

However, with coach Ralph Hasenhuttl taking his players to the holiday island of Tenerife for a warm-weather break, Obafemi was seen back on the training pitch as the squad were put through their paces on Monday.

Still largely untried at first-team level, the 18-year-old has bags of potential and is one for the future, but Hasenhuttl will be hoping he matures quickly to make a contribution in the coming years.

Although it will be a relief to have the Dublin-born starlet back up front, it is the rearguard that has been concerning the coach and the Austrian has made it clear he will be working hard on defensive formations during the trip to the Canaries.
