Saints wait on Lallana injury

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is facing a nervous wait as the club assesses the fitness of midfielder Adam Lallana over the next week.

The 24-year-old picked up a knee injury during the Saints’ vital 1-0 win over fellow Premier League strugglers Reading at the weekend, a result that lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Adkins confirmed that Lallana’s fitness will be closely monitored over the next few days, with the extent of the damage still not fully known.

However, he remains hopeful that with the Saints not having a game at the weekend Lallana can return for their next match against Sunderland on December 22.

“We will assess the injury in the next few days but the good news is that we do not have a match now until December 22 so he has extra time to recover,” said Adkins.

“Had there been a game this weekend, who knows? Adam’s knee is immobilised and we will see how he gets on.”
