Tottenham v Aston Villa Team News

Tottenham ace Son Heung-min says the new stadium and clubs supporters can prove to be the difference against Manchester City.

Tottenham will be without South Korea international Son Heung-min for their opening clash with Aston Villa as he is suspended.

The attacking midfielder picked up a red card in Tottenham’s loss to Bournemouth at the end of last season, so is ruled out, with Lucas Moura the man expected to step in.

Juan Foyth is also out after being sent off in the same Cherries game, but he has an injury and would not have played anyway.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is blighted by injury problems, with Ben Davies, Dele Alli and Cameron Carter-Vickers also out with their own problems.

Serge Aurier, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier will all face late fitness tests before a decision is made on them.

New signing Tanguy Ndombele is likely to get his top-flight debut for the club in midfield, but fellow new-boy Giovani Lo Celso, who joined from Real Betis this week, is unlikely to feature due to his Copa America duties and lack of pre-season.

Spurs are many people’s tip to push the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool all the way for the title this season, but they know they need to get off to a good start, and nothing short of three points against newly-promoted Aston Villa will do.

Their record against the men from the West Midlands is a good one given they have won nine of their last ten matches against Villa in all competitions.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has made a host of new signings for the club, as he plots a way to survive their first season back in the Premier League following their play-off final triumph over Derby last May.

He could name as many as six new signings to start the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but so many new players are likely to take time to gel, with a trip to Spurs a tough start.

Villa will go into the game under no pressure and any kind of result will be an unexpected plus.

Ezri Konsa has picked up a minor injury, which ruled him out of the pre-season win over RB Leipzig, so fellow new recruit Bjorn Engels will probably get the nod alongside Tyrone Mings. Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet will both be pushing to start as well.
