Agent casts doubt over Bale exit

Gareth Bale’s omission from Real Madrid's squad for Wednesday’s La Liga clash with Osasuna has left reporters baffled.

Gareth Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, insists it is not a done deal that the forward will be leaving Real Madrid in January.

Bale’s relationship with the Madrid club over the past couple of seasons has become strained, to say the least, and there was further anger when he celebrated with the Wales national side after they qualified for Euro 2020, standing behind a national flag that had the words ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid’.

At any other club, the 30-year-old would be regarded as a legend based on his achievements with Los Blancos, but that is not the case in Spain and a January exit is said to be on the cards.

Since arriving at the Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, the Welshman has won four Champions League titles, memorably scoring the second and third goals in the 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the 2017/18 final, among other trophies.

He has been linked with a return to former club Spurs in January while Manchester United continue to show an interest in his services.

However, although revealing the former Southampton man is feeling great in Madrid, Barnett insists there is “no guarantee” an exit will happen in the New Year.

“He has never asked to leave,” he said on the Euro Leagues Podcast. “He has a contract with Real Madrid and as long as they want him, there’s not much anyone can do about it.

“He is a Real Madrid player he will play at 100% – and do very well. He wants to win the championship and the European championship and everything else. It will not affect his performance.”

Bale could be in La Liga action on Saturday when Madrid play host to Espanyol.
