Alderweireld in contention for return

Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld is in line to make his return for Spurs against Swansea on Saturday after stepping up his training this week.

The influential centre-back has not played since the 1-1 draw at West Brom on October 15 due to a knee injury, and Spurs have missed the Belgian at the back during that time, winning just one of their nine matches in all competitions.

Alderweireld has reminded manager Mauricio Pochettino of his possible availability by taking part in double training sessions on both Tuesday and Wednesday and he will now continue to train in the build up to Saturday’s game against the Swans in the hope of being part of the squad.

In Alderweireld’s absence, Kevin Wimmer has been utilised in defence by Pochettino but he is likely to step down again if the former Southampton man proves he is ready to return this weekend.
