Diop eyeing Hammers repeat

West Ham United
Issa Diop believes West Ham is the perfect place for him to develop after insisting he does not see the club as a stepping stone.

West Ham centre-back Issa Diop is hoping his side can repeat their heroics of last season when they face Manchester United on Sunday.

West Ham welcomed United to the London Stadium at a similar stage of the season last year and they recorded an impressive 3-1 victory thanks to strikes from Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic, as well as an own goal from Victor Lindelof.

Frenchman Diop was still in the infancy of his West Ham career at that stage after joining during the summer of 2018, but he produced an assured display against an expensively assembled United forward line that included Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.

The 22-year-old is now hoping for a repeat performance and result this time around as Manuel Pellegrini’s side look to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to five matches.

“We played a very good game against them last season,” Diop told the West Ham website. “It was our first win at home last season, and a very good moment for us.

“Sunday’s going to be a different game, so we have to try to do the same thing as last year. We have to play our football and not think about Manchester United.”

West Ham should certainly be in confident mood ahead of Sunday’s match, as they have impressed since their opening day hammering at the hands of Manchester City, recording impressive wins against Watford and Norwich over recent weeks.

“We have a very good team and can beat anyone, so we are confident,” Diop added. “In the Premier League every game is difficult, but we are ready for this game. I think if we play our football, we’re a team who can do anything.”

However, last season’s win is the only victory the Hammers have recorded over United in the last seven meetings between the two sides, losing four of those previous clashes, including a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford in April.
