Felipe Anderson believes West Ham can mount a serious challenge in the top half of the Premier League this season.

The Hammers are rated as genuine contenders to gatecrash the top six this season and the top four could be a realistic target given the struggles of the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United in these early stages of the season.

West Ham did lose a few key men during the summer, with Marko Arnautovic the most notable departure, but recruited well themselves – with record buy Sebastien Haller looking like a particularly shrewd capture as he has managed four goals in seven Premier League games so far.

Brazilian Anderson is satisfied with how his side have started the campaign but the former Lazio man feels there is much more to come from the Londoners as the season progresses.

“Last year, a lot of players arrived so it was hard because we didn’t know each other and we had to play together straight away, but now we have spent a year together so this year we need to improve,” he told the club website.

He added: “We are training hard and that’s good for West Ham. I’m excited. I’m sure we can do really great things this season.”

West Ham suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace last time out but Manuel Pellegrini’s men have still made a solid start to the season with 12 points from eight games.

The Hammers sit in eighth place and are just two points adrift of Leicester City in fourth spot.

West Ham head to Everton in the next round of fixtures after the international break before back-to-back home games against Sheffield United and Newcastle United and they will be looking to pick up as many points as possible over the next few weeks ahead of the busy festive period.
