Forlan tips Atleti for serious title challenge
Former Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan believes the club will mount a serious challenge for the La Liga title this season.
Forlan spent four years playing for Atletico between 2007 and 2011 and he won both the Europa League title and the UEFA Super Cup during his time with the club.
Diego Simeone’s current Atleti side have made an impressive start to the season, as they sit top of the La Liga standings after winning their opening three games and they are already five points clear of champions Barcelona and four ahead of rivals Real Madrid.
Atleti have not won the La Liga title since 2014 and that is their only success since the turn of the century, but Forlan believes the current squad, particularly after some shrewd signings during the summer, is capable of at least challenging for overall glory this season.
“Real Madrid and Barcelona both have great players, but so do Atletico,” Forlan told reporters.
“They had a great pre-season and now we need to see how they get on in La Liga, but they have made a really fast start and look really impressive.
“They are a team who always fight and they will be competing for the league title and the gap between them and winning it is getting closer and closer.”
Los Rojiblancos will be looking to maintain their perfect start to the new campaign when they travel to the Anoeta to take on Real Sociedad on Saturday.
