Lage tells Felix not to listen to Ronaldo comparison
Benfica manager Bruno Lage has told Joao Felix to forget about comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo and focus on himself.
The 19-year-old burst onto the scene last season with a series of sensational performances in the Primeira Liga, where he scored 15 times in 26 games.
As a result, he earned a huge move to Atletico Madrid during the summer, with Diego Simeone’s team paying 6m over Benfica’s staggering 126million euro release clause.
Felix has played three times for his new club and having initially impressed, grabbed his first goal in their 3-2 win against Eibar just before the international break.
Such performances have led to comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo due to the potential the midfielder has.
However, his former boss Lage has urged his protégé to ignore those calls and focus on his own game and own style of play.
“It’s unfair the comparisons that are made between João, who is starting his career with one of the best players of all time like Cristiano Ronaldo,” Benfica coach Lage told CNN.
“I’d like to see João be true to himself and keep the attributes which distinguish him from the others. He doesn’t have to compare himself to Ronaldo.”
Felix only made his senior debut in August 2018 but has already built up a fearsome reputation across Europe.
He earned a maiden call up to the Portugal squad for their opening Euro 2020 qualifiers in March but did not appear until the Nations League semi-finals, when they beat Switzerland.
