Atleti’s Gimenez ‘dying’ to win Champions League
Jose Maria Gimenez is targeting Champions League success this season, claiming that he is “dying” to win the trophy with Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old Uruguay international defender has made over 150 appearances for the Spanish outfit since he joined from Danubio in his homeland in summer 2013.
Gimenez featured in Atleti’s run to the final of the Champions League in 2014 and 2016 when they lost on both occasions to Real Madrid.
And, looking ahead to their mouth-watering Group D opener against Juventus on Wednesday night, he has spoken of his desire to finally taste European glory with Diego Simeone’s side.

“It is not an obsession, but I am dying to win it,” Gimenez told Diario AS.
“We were close twice but football is like that: it is beautiful but when it hits you it hits you ugly. You have to be prepared for everything and when it hits you it makes you strong.
“We have many new teammates and we try to show them what it means to us at Atleti, the Champions and La Liga. Obsession would be very hard to say but we do have a brutal desire to win it.”
