Atleti in talks over Thomas extension
La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid are reportedly in advanced negotiations to extend the contract of midfielder Thomas Partey.
Ghana international Thomas has been a regular first-team fixture in Madrid’s side over the past couple of seasons and looks set to be rewarded with an improved contract, having impressed Argentine tactician Diego Simeone.
The 26-year-old’s position in the starting XI wasn’t always assured and it looked like he was on the way out of the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium back in the summer of 2015, having spent the two previous seasons out on loan with Mallorca and Almeria.
However, the box-to-box midfielder has proved his worth over the last two years and has played in all but one of Atletico’s eight La Liga games this term, scoring once in the 3-2 victory against Eibar at the start of September.
Reports are now suggesting Thomas, who signed a contract extension in March 2018 until the summer of 2023, will be offered a significant pay rise due to his consistent performances, while the club are also looking to increase his release clause, which currently stands at €50million.
It is understood an agreement is imminent between both parties and it will be made public before Christmas.
Simeone’s men currently sit third in the Spanish top flight, three points behind table-toppers Real. Los Rojiblancos return to domestic action on October 19 when they play host to Valencia, who are unbeaten in their last four league games.
A tough home clash against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League then follows for Atleti before Bilbao make the trip to the Wanda Metropolitano four days later.
