Atleti boosted by returning Felix
Atletico Madrid have been boosted by the return to training of star forward Joao Felix.
Portugal international Felix has been sidelined for the last four weeks after picking up an ankle injury in Atletico’s 1-1 La Liga draw with Valencia at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atleti have only won three of their six games in the 20-year-old’s absence, but he could now be available for Saturday’s trip to Granada after he returned to training this week, although the club have confirmed he will continue to be assessed in the build-up to that match.
Felix had certainly hit the ground running with Atleti prior to his injury, as he featured regularly in Diego Simeone’s side over the opening two months of the season following his reported £113million move from Benfica.
The youngster’s impending return appears to be a timely one, as fellow forward Diego Costa is expected to be sidelined for three months with a hernia problem, although he is currently in Brazil seeking a second opinion.
Central defender Jose Gimenez also remains on the treatment table with the thigh injury he picked up in last month’s Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen, although – like Felix – Stefan Savic is back in training following a month on the sidelines with a muscle problem he sustained while on international duty with Montenegro.
Atleti could certainly do with all hands on deck at the moment, as they have only won three of their last 10 games in La Liga, although they remain only a point behind leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid in the standings.
