The Moroccan is seen as crucial to any hopes the R's may have of retaining their Premier League status and new boss Harry Redknapp had been hoping to keep all his stars at Loftus Road in the new year.
That now looks unlikely as Taarabt has admitted that, although he would like to stay, he is more than likely to go to South Africa and play for his country meaning he could be away for up to six weeks and will miss some crucial games for the side.
He said: "It's a difficult decision because the manager asked if I could stay.
"I would love to but it's my country so if I say 'No', everybody at home will think I don't want to play - so I think I will go.
"I go to Morocco every summer. If they don't do well, the fans will have a go at me and I don't want that."
