The Gers boss had been keeping an eye on the 35-year-old veteran defender while he was away on international duty with Portugal, given that he only recently recovered from a calf injury which forced him to miss last month's Old Firm defeat against Celtic.
It was initially thought that Alves would not be ready to line-up against the Saints on Friday as Portugal's final World Cup qualifier in Lisbon was on Tuesday night.
Alves didn't feature for his country as he watched the 2-0 win against Switzerland from the substitutes' bench, and Caixinha has suggested he could now start at McDiarmid Park.
He said: "He will definitely be training with the group tomorrow [Thursday], and he will be able to be with us on Friday.
"Without receiving minutes [in Portugal] he can be with us, he maybe can start also on Friday."
