Maguire reveals Burgess return date

Sam Burgess is expected to make his long awaited league comeback in a trial match against Gold Coast Titans on February 20.

Burgess has rejoined NRL outfit South Sydney Rabbitohs after a stint in union, having been a member of England's World Cup squad in 2015.

The 27-year-old was originally supposed to make his league return for Wayne Bennett's World All Stars on February 13 but Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire feels that match at Suncorp Stadium will come too soon for Burgess.

Maguire feels the Gold Coast trial is a more realistic return date for Burgess, who has not played any rugby since England's Pool Stage World Cup exit.

"It will more than likely be the Gold Coast trial,'' Maguire told The Daily Telegraph.

"Just with where his body is at, I have some great staff who have all the data on him before he left us to where he is now, he's in great shape, but obviously to play our game you need to make sure your body is right.

"He's coming off a massive break. He's had a good break now. Sam and 'GI' (Greg Inglis) have both had good breaks, they're fresh and bouncing around at training, and we need to utilise that going into the season.''
