Youthful look to Scotland squad

Coach Steve McCormack has selected a youthful Scotland squad ahead of the World Cup in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

With injuries to the likes of Lachlan Coote (ankle), Kane Linnett, Liam Hood (knee), and Peter Wallace (rib and hand), McCormack has been forced to look at alternatives ahead of the major tournament.

Wigan Warriors starlet Lewis Tierney is one of the most exciting names in the backline, which also includes Warrington full-back Matty Russell and Huddersfield talisman Danny Brough, who will skipper the side.

New Zealand Warrior James Bell, Sydney Roosters' Jarred Anderson, and Penrith Panthers' centre Lachlan Stein have all been named for the first time, while Brandan Wilkinson and Shane Toal have come through the Scotland Under-19 pathway.

McCormack is pleased with his squad and feels young players have been rewarded for their form this season.

"It is a young squad but that's exciting, too," admitted McCormack. "When we took our youngest ever team to play in France two years ago, I said some of them would be on the plane to Australia and a lot of them will be on Sunday. Alex Walker (age 22) has been outstanding for London Broncos this season, week-in, week-out and Lewis Tierney (22) was one of Catalans' best players in their big games at the end of the season."
