Sassuolo set up swoop for Argentina defender

Serie A

Sassuolo are closing in on a deal to sign Zenit St Petersburg and Argentina defender Emanuel Mammana on loan with a purchase option for next year.

Gianluca Di Marzio was among the first to report that the Neroverdi were on the verge of agreeing a season-long loan for Mammana with a €10-11m option to buy him next summer.

The 23-year-old became Sassuolo’s top defensive target after the Serie A club missed out on Omer Toprak, who made a loan move to Werder Bremen instead.

The young Argentine’s career has suffered in Russia and a move to Italy could be just what he needs to regain the promise he showed as a youngster with River Plate.

Injuries played their part in ruining his spells at Olympique Lyonnais and Zenit, where he has played just 23 league games in two years.

A ligament and meniscus injury sidelined him for much of 2018 and he missed his chance to go to the World Cup in Russia, but he returned to action last October.

Mammana would not take up a non-EU spot because he holds an Italian passport which makes him an attractive target for Sassuolo.

He was previously linked with the likes of Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina, as well as Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur.
