Zaniolo has ‘great’ targets with Roma

Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi says he never put Nicolo Zaniolo up for sale, contrary to reports.

Nicolo Zaniolo says Roma can achieve “something great” this season after Saturday’s win over Napoli.

Zaniolo opened the scoring as the Giallorossi overcame Napoli 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico, with Jordan Veretout doubling their advantage before Arkadiusz Milik pulled a goal back for the visitors.

The victory moved Roma into third spot in Serie A with 22 points, seven behind pacesetters Juventus.

Roma missed out on Champions League qualification last term and a top-four finish will be a target for Paulo Fonseca’s men.

Napoli came in second last season and Zaniolo feels the win over the Partenopei on Saturday proves his side are a match for any of their Serie A rivals.

“We’re very happy,” Zaniolo told reporters. “It was a direct battle and we forced the win.

“We’ll keep working ourselves to win more and hope we can do something great.”

He added: “We can now come into important games and win.”

Zaniolo has been linked with a move away from Rome, with Tottenham believed to be among his suitors, but the 20-year-old Italy international is not expected to depart in January and it would take a huge bid to tempt Roma into a sale in the summer as he is under contract until 2024.

Roma are also well placed to mount a challenge in the Europa League as they sit at the top of Group J with five points from three games so far.

The Italian giants head to Germany to take on Borussia Monchengladbach on Thursday in the Europa League before a tough trip to Parma in Serie A on Sunday.
