The Bianconeri continued their unbeaten start to this year's Champions League but it was by no means easy, with Juan Cuadrado's 76th-minute winner coming 22 minutes after Mario Lemina had been sent off.
Goalkeeper Buffon was one of the heroes on the night, making a string of fine saves to belie his 38 years.
The skipper admitted he was less than satisfied with his side's display against Les Gones but says he could not fault the spirit they showed, something he feels will stand them in good stead going forward.
He said: "There was still a long way to go and when you’re down to 10 men you know there’s always a chance you can end up losing.
"Lyon have a lot of quality up top but we responded by keeping things really tight when we were a man light. The win goes a long way towards securing qualification from the group."
