Arrivederci Carlo as Napoli line up Gattuso
Napoli have parted company with Carlo Ancelotti just hours after guiding them into the last 16 of the Champions League.
The Serie A outfit hammered Genk 4-0 to ensure their progression through to the knockout stage of Europe’s elite competition, behind Liverpool who topped the group.
It is Napoli’s poor form in Serie A that is said to have prompted the decision, but the timing of the sacking, just hours after the win, is still very strange.
“Napoli has taken the decision to part ways with first-team coach Carlo Ancelotti,” a statement read. “The friendship and mutual respect between the club, President Aurelio De Laurentiis and Carlo Ancelotti remain intact.”
Napoli had been expected to challenge for the Scudetto this season but have had a difficult campaign and currently sit in seventh place in Serie A, a huge 17 points behind leaders Inter Milan.
It was thought that Napoli’s form in the Champions League, which has been excellent, could keep him in a job, but clearly not as the powers that be axed him late on Tuesday night.
Reports are now rife suggesting that a replacement has already been lined up in the form of former AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso.
Gattuso has been out of work since being axed by Milan at the end of last season, but looks on course to make a return to the dugout with Partenopei.
As for Ancelotti, he should not be out of work for long with both Everton and Arsenal keen to talk him regards their vacant managerial positions.
