Saints boss holds key to Torres talk

Saints and Newcastle are reportedly showing interest in Fernando Torres, who could be made available by Atletico Madrid in January.

The 33-year-old forward has started just one Primera Division match for Atletico this season, seeing 182 minutes of action, and is set to be pushed further down the pecking order when Diego Costa is registered in January.

Torres has 18 months left on his contract and may still want to finish his career at the Madrid club - where it all began for him in in 2001 - so a short-term loan deal could suit all parties.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez signed Torres for Liverpool in 2007 and managed him again at Chelsea during his short spell in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard could hold the aces if the striker decides to come back to the Premier League but Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino was first-team coach at Anfield during Torres' time there and would appear to have the greater need for a striker.
