Griffiths set for European outing
Neil Lennon has confirmed Leigh Griffiths will play a part in Celtic's final Europa League Group E clash away at CFR Cluj on Thursday night.
Scotland international Griffiths has struggled with injuries this season and has been limited to just six Scottish Premiership appearances, of which only one came from the start, while he played just one game of Celtic’s successful Scottish League Cup campaign.
The 29-year-old was expected to be named on the bench for the League Cup final on Sunday as the Bhoys overcame Old Firm rivals Rangers 1-0 at Hampden Park but a late change in plans forced Lennon to switch things up regarding his team selection.
With Frenchman Odsonne Edouard, who has scored 10 goals from 12 league matches, only fit enough for a place on the bench, Griffiths was bumped from the substitutes’ bench as the match-day squad was tweaked ahead of kick-off.
Lennon has revealed the Scot will be involved in Thursday’s Europa League clash against Cluj, with Celtic already assured top spot in Group E, while Ivory Coast international Vakoun Bayo, who has netted twice from six SPL games since his January arrival from Dunajska Streda, will also be playing.
“Griff probably would’ve been in the squad on Sunday but our plans altered when Odsonne Edouard called off and said he couldn’t start the game – otherwise he would have started and Griff would’ve been on the bench,” he said, according to the Daily Record.
“But when Odsonne didn’t feel comfortable starting, Leigh missed out but he and Bayo will be involved in Cluj.”
Celtic, who have won their last 12 games in all competitions, then return to league action on Sunday when they play host to Hibernian.
