Gerrard urges Rangers to learn from rivals Celtic

Steven Gerrard says his Rangers players can right the wrongs of two years ago when they face Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League.

Rangers coach Steven Gerrard has urged his side to learn from Celtic’s Champions League defeat on Tuesday.

The Hoops were dumped out of Europe’s premier club competition after losing 5-4 on aggregate to CFR Cluj.

Celtic threw away the lead in front of their own fans and they are now set to drop into the Europa League play-off round.

Gerrard has told his side to learn from Celtic’s mistakes as they prepare to defend a 4-2 lead in the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie against FC Midtjylland

He told reporters: “What it shows last night is that European ties are never over, even when you get a positive result in the first leg.

“Some of these teams that people don’t know much about – Cluj from Romania for example or Midtjylland from Denmark – they carry a huge threat.

“They are so desperate for financial reasons to progress, like most of us, so my players need to take note of last night and make sure we deal with our second leg much better.”

Goals from Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo, Nikola Katic and Scott Arfield have put Rangers in control as they prepare to welcome the Danish outfit to Ibrox on Thursday night.
