Gerrard – Rangers rose to tough challenge

Steven Gerrard has praised the way his Rangers side ground out their 1-0 victory over St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

A Borna Barisic free-kick just before the hour mark proved to be enough for the Gers to maintain their perfect start to the new league season.

On a hot afternoon at St Mirren Park, Rangers had to adopt a patient approach and Gerrard was pleased with the professionalism his side showed to get over the line.

“If you have played the game, you know that’s a tough challenge but I thought the players in the main were very good,” Gerrard was quoted as saying by the Rangers website.

“We faced the challenge and we tried to probe and make things happen, I would have liked a little bit more quality in the final third – but if you can’t do it in general play, you need people to step up and produce magic, and that is what Borna has done.”

Rangers will now face a potentially pivotal week in their season, as they will first welcome Legia Warsaw to Ibrox for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie before hosting Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the new season three days later.

Gerrard added: “In the main, I am delighted with the three points. It’s three wins from three, and it sets us up for a big week.”
