Barisic admits to Gerrard issue

Rangers
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told Borna Barisic to build on his first goal for the club after handing him the chance to make a fresh start at Ibrox.

Borna Barisic admits he and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard had "some problems" last season but they are now firmly on the same page.

Croatia international Barisic made the move to Ibrox during the summer of 2018 on the back of an impressive performance against the Gers for previous club Osijek during Europa League qualifying.

However, the 26-year-old was in and out the team during his first season in Glasgow, making just 14 starts in the Scottish Premiership, with injuries blighting the start to his Rangers career.

The full-back has now revealed that one injury he picked up while on international duty with Croatia left Gerrard particularly frustrated and meant their relationship became strained, although he insists both parties have now put that behind them.

“I had some problems with him (Gerrard) because of my injury with Croatia, but that is behind us now,” Barisic told reporters ahead of Croatia’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Slovakia and Azerbaijan.

“I will always be concentrating on Rangers first and it will be that way for as long as I play with them.”

Rangers certainly appear to now be seeing the best of Barisic, who grabbed his first goal for the club by curling in a spectacular free-kick during last month’s 1-0 victory at St Mirren.
