Smith appoints assistant

New Stevenage manager Gary Smith has appointed Mark Newson as his assistant at the Lamex Stadium.

Newson becomes the first addition to MLS Cup-winning coach Smith's backroom team after he was unveiled as Graham Westley's successor on Wednesday.

A former captain of Bournemouth under Harry Redknapp, Newson made almost 200 appearances for the Cherries and also played for Fulham and Barnet.

His coaching career has taken in spells at West Ham and most recently Crystal Palace.
