Pieters hoping for Utrecht return

Stoke defender Erik Pieters has revealed that he wants to end his career with Utrecht, while hinting he could also head to China.

Pieters was the first player to join Stoke following Mark Hughes’ appointment in the summer of 2013 and he has now racked up over 150 Premier League appearances.

The versatile defender is currently contracted to the Potters until 2020 but he says he would find it hard to turn down the lure of the Chinese Super League and all the financial bonuses that come along with it.

Pieters said: “There are extreme amounts involved in football.

“It is not my motivation but I do not act hypocritically. Financial independence is a beautiful goal. For that reason, in a few years, I would like to play football in China for a while.”

The Dutchman may well have an eye on a switch to the Far East but he insists he would like to end his career where it all started with Utrecht.

He added: “I know only one thing for sure and that is I want to finish my career at Utrecht. You can just write down, ‘I owe everything to Utrecht.’

“I learned so much from the trainers, Foeke Booy and John van Loen, but also from players like Jean-Paul de Jong, Rickie Kruys, Tim Cornelisse and Alje Schut.

“FC Utrecht is in my heart and that’s why I hope to play for them again … if the club wants me back.”
