Positivity key for Berahino

Stoke assistant Mark Bowen says Saido Berahino must keep his spirits high if he is going to end his barren run in front of goal.

Former England Under-21 international Berahino joined the Potters in January 2017 from West Bromwich Albion for a reported £12million, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract, but he is yet to open his account for the club.

The 24-year-old missed a golden opportunity before the international break to end his goal drought after Stoke were awarded a penalty in the clash against Southampton, but he failed to convert the spot-kick to the dismay of the home crowd.

Pressure is mounting on the striker with every match to start finding the back of the net but Bowen says Berahino has been told to stay calm and keep plugging away in front of goal.

"We've told him that if he starts getting down on himself and losing confidence it will just compound it, so he's got to keep going," he said. "We see his qualities every day in training, and I've said to him that one of these days he just needs the old man upstairs to smile on him and then he will be up and running.

"He's bubbly in training and we encourage him to be that way. He hasn't scored for a while, but if he beats himself up that's only going to compound the issue."
