Reid surprised at star's Potters' omission
Latest news update:
Republic of Ireland star Steven Reid says he cannot believe his midfield partner Glenn Whelan has failed to start for Stoke recently.
The Blackburn Rovers man featured in the Irish midfield engine room on Saturday as Whelan scored the second goal in his country's 2-1 World Cup qualifying Group Eight success against Georgia. And, after being impressed with the Potters man during the game, Reid is stunned as to why he has been left on the substitutes' bench by City boss Tony Pulis for the last two Premier League games against Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.
Reid was quoted in the Sentinel saying: "I am enjoying playing alongside Glenn - he has been brilliant.
"It's really surprising he has not played the last couple of games at club level for Stoke.
"He is great technically, a great passer of the ball and he can put his foot in as well, and I have been really impressed with him in the last couple of games he's played for Ireland.
"And he also chipped in with a goal on Saturday, which we are all delighted about.
"It is a bit of an Italian way we play, maybe, but [coach Giovanni] Trapattoni likes us two to sit in there and keep the ball.
"Hopefully we can improve the partnership and go forward."
Ironically Whelan could be in line for a recall to the Potters starting XI against Everton on Sunday as holding midfielder Amdy Faye will start a three-match ban following his red card at Boro in the last game.
