The Austria international joined Stoke in the closing stages of the summer transfer window in an £18million deal from Tottenham, and he was handed his debut in the 2-2 draw with Manchester United last weekend.
Ryan Shawcross remains sidelined with a ligament injury and Geoff Cameron is a doubt for this weekend’s assignment with Newcastle, meaning Wimmer likely to be paired with fellow summer arrival Kurt Zouma.
Wimmer believes the Magpies will pose a serious threat at St James’ Park but insists Stoke will be looking to claim all three points.
“It will be a totally different game to Man Utd. Newcastle had quite a difficult start but then they won their last game at home against West Ham and they won at Swansea. It’s still difficult even if many people would expect us to go there and get at least one point, maybe three,” Wimmer said.
“We will prepare very well. We know it’s going to be very difficult and hopefully we will come back with three points.”
