It was seen as a big gamble by Tony Pulis when the injury prone defender arrived at the club last summer but it is one that has paid off and the player could be set for an extended stay.
Woodgate is currently out of the side through injury but he has made a more than adequate contribution to Stoke's season and three more appearances would automatically trigger a clause in his contract guaranteeing him another year.
With games fast running out that may not happen but there is every chance Pulis will offer him a deal anyway after he impressed when handed a chance.
Woodgate is happy to wait but would jump at the chance of a new deal if offered.
"I would like to stay, but it depends on the club," said Woodgate. "I am in no rush about it, so we'll see what happens. It was important I got games under my belt."
