The Black Cats currently have eight first team regulars sat on the sidelines and, having added a host of young recruits over the summer, Moyes says the influence of the 28-year-old could be vital.
Sunderland have yet to start the Nigerian international this season, although he may start for the under 23 side this week, but he is in full training and Moyes is looking forward to having him available.
“Victor has been back training over the international break, and was in the squad at Stoke and got a few minutes near the end. I don’t think he was ready to start,” Moyes told the Chronicle.
“Ideally, I’d have probably tried to get him a reserve game first, depending on numbers, but I couldn’t do that.
“I needed him at Stoke because he was a senior player and we didn’t have many of those available. I need some seniority in the first team squad, even coming off the bench.
“We need that.”
