Comeback on track for midfielder

Sunderland midfielder Jan Kirchhoff has not suffered a recurrence of his injury problem and is on track for a first-team return.

There had been a worry that the German had suffered a fresh injury setback when he did not feature for the under-23 side against Spurs on Monday, but his absence has been explained as a stomach bug.

A mainstay of the first team that successfully fought off relegation last term, Kirchhoff has hardly featured this season after he picked up a nasty hamstring injury in the summer and then aggravated it in October.

He is in contention for the clash with Leicester City at the Stadium of Light this weekend although David Moyes will ease him back very gently and is unlikely to feature.
